When a MLB headline says a team did something historic, something that hasn’t been done in more than 100 years, the reader doesn’t expect the Rangers to be the subject.
But on Wednesday night, Texas scored 30 runs against the Orioles, putting up 5 in the fourth, 9 in the sixth, 10 in the eighth and 6 in the ninth, to destroy Baltimore by 27 runs.
Since 1900, the most runs scored by one team in a game was 29 — set by Boston against St. Louis on June 8, 1950. In 1897, Chicago racked up 36 runs against Louisville on June 29.
The four pitchers Baltimore used gave up 6, 7, 8 and 9 runs, respectively.
Rangers 30, Orioles 3: An early 3-0 hole would be long forgotten by the sixth, when both Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf hit grand slams. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez each had 7 RBI.
Brewers 2, Diamondbacks 3: Brandon Webb’s scoreless innings streak (42) ended abruptly in the first inning, but the ace still managed to get the win. The Brewers loss, combined with the Cubs win in San Fran, put Chicago back in first.
Indians 11, Tigers 8: Heading to the fourth inning, it looked like Justin Verlander would cruise to the win. That is, until he gave up 4-straight runs with 2 outs. Carlos Guillen homered for the second-straight game while Paul Byrd picked up his 12th win for Cleveland.
Padres 7, Mets 5: Jake Peavy proved he’s one of the most dominant pitchers in the N.L., fanning 11 Mets on the way to his 14th win this season. Paired with a Philadelphia loss to the Dodgers, the win put the Padres back in first in the Wild Card race.
