ESPN reminds you, black and white people hate each other

Vick Divide

When I get home from “real” work, I like to catch the 6 p.m. SportsCenter.

It allows me to skip Jim Rome’s Ree-dick-u-lus show, stupid PTI, all that nonsense.

But tonight, a special program (hosted by Bob Ley of course) took the place of SC…“The Vick Divide.”

People disagree on Mike Vick? I wasn’t aware.

Well, if you didn’t see it, imagine the most ridiculous town hall possible, then multiply it by the number of white ESPN anchors. (Side note: Is “The Vick Divide” some witty pun I’m not getting?)

For most of the program, Bob Ley was telling the crowd to settle down and “be civil.”

Former Falcon Terance Mathis got a lot of applause for saying “Jesus” and “God” frequently.

Terrence Moore, got booed a lot by “his city.” And the director of the Humane Society got hissed at (imagine that).

The best part was probably when Bob Ley interrupted the proceedings to cut to an ESPN breaking news update!!!! Brian Griese is getting the start for the Bears next week. Oh. Never saw that coming.

Frankly, I think ESPN knew that black Atlanta fans in the crowd (supporters of Vick) would look raucous and loud. There was basically just a lot of yelling, and one crowd member even tried to compare the punishments of Belichick and Vick (seriously). Despite how you feel, I hope it’s safe to say that people see dogfighting in different lights.

Yes, it’s illegal. But obviously, it doesn’t mean the same to you as it does to the next person.

Some people who decry dogfighting are the same people who say hunting is fine because “the animal dies quickly.” Others say it’s just part of the culture.

The bottom line is that ESPN isn’t going to solve cultural differences by having a crowd hiss and yell at media members. They know that. They want loud, in your face shows (Rome, are you still reading), which is why they showed minutes of footage of dogs fighting. Can we please move past this? Talk about the Packers. Talk about the Chargers. Hell, talk about Rex Grossman. Anything but this.

Yeah, I think it’s probably time to move on from the Michael Vick analysis (although, if he keeps getting indicted, there may be no end in sight!).

But do you really think that there are a broad range of opinions about the morality of dogfighting, or could it be more a matter of a high-profile black athlete getting into trouble and his “supporters” assuming that race is involved? If you took a nationwide survey about the ethics of dogfighting, I think you’d have a pretty strong consensus, irrespective of race. But because of people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, black people have begun to assume that anytime another black person gets busted, it was actually because of the color of their skin.

Sportscenter is alright, but Rome and PTI are soooo much better. I hope you aren’t dissing my boy Romey, er I mean Rome, because he’s got a recipe for Apple Bavarian Tort that is dee-lishous. Mag-nanamous. Reese’s … Peanutbuttercups.

Even some who agree about the immorality of dogfighting, see an even higher immorality in depriving a man of his liberty over some dogs he owned.

As one black matron succintly put it: “Are you gonna destroy a man over some dogs?” The answer is “yes” but don’t expect us who disagree with this to take it quietly.

Vick is in no way, shape or form “being destroyed”. While it’s entirely possible that his NFL career will be finished by the time he gets out of jail (even if the league rescinds his suspension), this is a guy who by all rights should have millions of dollars in the bank. At the very least the guy can go back to college, get a degree and move on with a “regular” life. How is that “being destroyed”?

The AJC columnist’s name is Terrence Moore, not Terrence Howard.

  6. September 26, 2007 at 1:57 pm

He only lacked one year to finish his “degree”. He could easily go on to accomplish so much selling used cars, insurance, real-estate or weed. What a guy!

You can take the thug out of the projects but you can’t take the projects out of the thug.

Props to Billie for pointing out that I’m a moron. Must have been bakin’ with Vick last night that did me in.

I’m sorry your 6 PM Sportscenter was canceled. That’s the real issue here. I’m keeping my eye on the prize.

Who wants to solve cultural differences when you can get excited viewers boosting your ratings?

human wave, u serious? dog fighting is illegal. bottom line. all the other people who have been caught dog fighting got the same punishment. if he didnt want to go to jail, he shouldn’t have done it. besides, dogs, contrary to your understanding, can actually think and feel pain. putting dogs through senseless pain and suffering for no reason is something that mentally-distorted people do. besides, vicks a piece of shit. in case you didnt know, hes in drug rehab right now also. oh, and the weed he got caught with in the airport….etc. the list goes on and on. if you support vick, your either black or a young idiot falcons fan.

You, my racist friend, are what’s wrong with America. It’s a damn shame that people like you help to perpetuate racism in our country. I’m of Irish decent, and I don’t hate the English. Do you know why? Because I wasn’t alive when that stuff went down. And you weren’t alive for slavery, you don’t have to forgive me for anything because I DIDNT DO ANYTHING TO YOU! So please, do everyone a favor and shut the hell up you racist piece of shit. Learn proper grammer before you respond… Racist and uneducated, what a coinicednce…

Let’s be honest, this racism matters very little to anyone. If so, we would not follow religiously the John Stewarts, Bill Mahers, Glen Becks etc. none of whom could complete a joke or statement without a slur to Blacks, Gays, Hispanics, Asians, or those of Middle Eastern descent. The political content is only an acceptable mask of minstrelsy. If you took a shot of vodka for each slur in any of these shows, an emergency room visit would be eminent.
