Mark Cuban hates the Cubs; Jason Kendall’s a star

I’ve been fairly indifferent on Mark Cuban buying the Cubs. To be honest, it probably wouldn’t make that big of a difference. He would spend more money, but he has spent more money in Dallas, and what have they won?

But despite my lack of enthusiasm, I still think MC would be good for the team if only because he’s so polarizing. He’d bring nothing but attention to the club.

Nevertheless, I knew it wouldn’t be long until a member of the Chicago media would say something stupid about Cuban’s potential ownership. Little did I know I’d hit the jackpot when it happened.

Mike Downey, of Chicagosports.com, says no way does he want Mark Cuban owning his team. And why is this, you may ask? Because Cuban is a Pirates fan!

Yes, that’s right, Mark cheers for the Bucs. Can’t you hear the outrage building in the Windy City? No? Could that be because the two teams aren’t actually “division rivals” like Downey asserts? When is the last time the Cubs were battling the Pirates down the stretch for the pennant? Yea, I don’t remember either.

But Downey just keeps digging himself deeper:

Although the Cubs continued to roll, it’s against everything good and holy to lead two straight baseball wraps with the Loveable Losers.

So, since I’m sure half of you had Ken Griffey Jr. tees in your closets as kids, we’ll go with that.

Reds 10, Braves 3: Griffey passed Frank Robinson to take sixth place on the home run list all by himself. He’s currently got 587 dingers, and Slammin’ Sammy Sosa is next to be passed. Sosa currently sits fifth with 602 career home runs.

Cubs 3, Giants 2: After all the hype was sucked out of the Bonds Watch in the Windy City (he was scratched from the lineup before the game), the Cubs gave the ticket holders their moneys worth. With two on and two outs in the eighth (and the Cubs trailing 2-1), Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run double that would prove the winning hit. Although the Cubbies still trail Milwaukee by 3.5 games in the N.L. Central, they’ve won 16 of their last 20 – best in baseball.

White Sox 11, Indians 10: As a Tigers fan, I’m going to side with the Pale Hose against the Tribe every time this season. Well, the Sox built up an 11-2 lead through six innings, then almost blew it. Although the Indians made Chicago use six relievers, the comeback fell short. And even though the Sox won the game, Cleveland won the dubious honor of “Worst game wrap sentence of the day” with this gem:

Few could expect the Indians to rebound from that nine-run outburst and make something out of a 11-2 ballgame. Regardless, that’s just what the Tribe did.

No way! I never would have guessed that! So few would have.

Dodgers 10, Phillies 3: The Phillies have now lost 10,001 games, which for some reason, isn’t getting a lot of press. It’s a record people! The Dodgers, who lost 13 of 14 after the All-Star break last year, have now won five in a row. Brad Penny picked up his 11th win.
